A journey through some of the most enduring films brought to us by the work of these two masters, including THE IMAGINARY

The work of Isao Takahata and Yoshiyuki Momose together represents decades of stunning artistry from two of Japan’s most influential animators. Takahata, co-founder of Studio Ghibli alongside Hayao Miyazaki, brought his unique vision as director to classic animated works like&nbsp;Grave of the Fireflies and&nbsp;The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. Yoshiyuki Momose, a vital animator and longtime collaborator of Takahata, contributed his remarkable talents to many of Takahata’s key films. Their work together inspired a generation of animators, and paved the way for Studio Ponoc, founded in 2014 by Yoshiaki Nishimura. This new chapter in animation allowed Momose to step into the role of director in this year’s wondrous&nbsp;The Imaginary.&nbsp;The Bay Theater is proud to present&nbsp;Masters of Memory: The Films of Takahata and Momose, a journey through some of the most enduring films brought to us by the work of these two masters. The films, which include delightful tales for the whole family as well as haunting visions of a world in crisis, are essential for audiences captivated by the endless possibilities of animation. All screenings in this series will feature an exclusive, pre-recorded introduction by Yoshiyuki Momose.&nbsp;All films will be shown in their English-language versions, except for Grave of the Fireflies, which will be presented in Japanese with English-language subtitles.

A moving portrait of empathy and forgiveness, Daughters traces an eight-year documentary journey by filmmaker Natalie Rae and social change advocate Angela Patton. The film intimately follows Aubrey, Santana, Raziah, and Ja’Ana as they prepare for a momentous Daddy Daughter Dance with their incarcerated fathers. Speaking openly about their aspirations, dreams, and the emotional toll of their fathers’ absence, compounded by the constraints of virtual visits, these girls reveal a profound wisdom and resilience beyond their years. As they navigate heartbreak, anger, and uncertainty, they seize a precious opportunity to forge connections. Daughters sheds light on the complexities of familial bonds strained by the unforgiving barriers of the criminal justice system and emphasizes that the foundation of community healing lies within the family unit.

From writer-director Azazel Jacobs (French Exit, The Lovers) comes this bittersweet and often funny story of an elderly patriarch and the three grown daughters who come to be with him in his final days. Late on Christmas Eve, after the town has gone to sleep, a boy boards the mysterious train that waits for him--The Polar Express. When the boy arrives at the North Pole, Santa Claus offers him any gift he desires. The boy asks only for a bell from the harness of Santa's reindeer. But on the way home, the bell is lost. Christmas morning, the boy finds the bell under the Christmas tree, and when he shakes it, the bell makes the most beautiful sound he's ever heard. His mother admires the bell, but she laments that it is broken ... for, you see, only a true believer can hear the sound of the bell. Based on the classic Christmas story by Chris Von Allsburg.
